Online or face-to-face?

Every week, without fail, I get an email from

I have been signed up to receive their emails for many years now and their weekly update gives me info on networking events happening over the next week.

A few years ago these would all have been for events in my local area but looking at my most recent update around half of them are online meetings – many nationwide.

I guess we shouldn’t be surprised at this. Online clearly has logistical benefits in terms of not having to leave your office, reducing the time required to attend an event and giving you the opportunity to make contact with people far away from your office base. Indeed I know some great online groups run by fabulous people.

Decisions, decisions, decisions…

No one type of networking is better than any other but it is is helpful to appreciate that online and face-to-face networking events are very different.

In fact, the online vs face-to-face decision is just the start, there are all sorts of variations for networking in terms of formats, styles, membership requirements, time of day etc.

Why I like face-to-face networking

One of the things I love about meeting in person is actually being in the same room as everyone and really being able to “feel” the atmosphere in the room.

I also think that people do seem to listen to the introductions in a more focussed manner when you meet face-to-face.

Plus, the great thing about being physically present is being able to walk round the room and have those spontaneous conversations that can spark so many great ideas.

Give people the opportunity to get to know you

But, whatever style of networking you prefer, the most important thing is that once you have found a group where you feel comfortable and at home you turn up regularly, so that people have the chance to get to know you and your businesses properly.

Please do come and say hello at Coffee and Connect
