How to get the best out of networking

Last time I wrote about how networking can help your business so this time I thought you might find it helpful if I gave you some tips on things you can do to get the best out of networking.

1. Be prepared – put the dates in your diary well in advance and spend a few minutes planning your one minute introduction.

2. Have a positive attitude. If you enjoy what you do show it. Enthusiasm is infectious and you are much more likely to be remembered if you have a smile on your face.

3. Have an open mind to the connections you might make and make sure you listen properly to everyone’s minute all the way through. They might just say something at the end which is relevant to you or someone you know.

4. The people that get the most out of networking for themselves are the ones that also take the time to make connections for other people. So if you hear a presentation from someone who offers a service one your friends could use go over and get their details and pass it on.

5. Think laterally – maybe you could work with someone at the meeting to offer a package of services to your customers.

6. …and finally this is one I am sure you all know now but I am going to say it again! Once you have found a good group you need to attend regularly. It takes time for people to get to know you and remember what you do so treat your networking as a “proper” business meeting and get it booked into your diary.
